Starting on the day of birth, nearly all American children received vaccines. The CDC recommends 70 doses of 16 different vaccines between birth and age 18. The federal government recommends vaccines for adults too. It is the states, however, and increasingly private employers, that compel them. All 50 states mandate from 30 to 45 doses of about a dozen different vaccines for admission to day care and school.
