Not So Fast
So many of our popular apothegms are totally wrong. For example, this gem: "Don't assume, it makes an ass of you and me." No, it makes an ass of anyone who repeats it as though he/she just uttered some richly profound original insight. The fact is, nobody would ever get any work done if we didn't make myriad assumptions every day. Heck, we'd never even make it to work.
Here's another example: "There is no such thing as a free lunch". Really? It's true that somebody pays for it. But if Uncle Sam forces you to pick up the tab for your buddies at the table, it's a free lunch for them. (Uncle Sam just loves doing that until there are far too many people demanding their free lunch, and far too few farmers and cooks to serve them.)
And “Money can’t buy you happiness”. Yes, it can. Because it gives you the freedom to do what you want, be where you want, and control your own life. The reason people think money can’t buy happiness is that they don’t know what they want to do, or where they want to be, and have no idea how to manage their own life. If they don’t know how to be happy, money won’t help them figure it out.
